PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER: BIOSOCIAL INTERACTION RITUALS AND AUTISM

To summarize, the main points from above that constitute the core insights of our agenda for future sociological research on autism are these:

1) Autism is characterized by communication impairments, and individuals with such diagnoses demonstrate difficulties adhering to the rhythms of everyday interaction with others.

2) Paraverbal communication is an important modality of interactional synchrony. As discussed above, the paraverbal range of the human voice communicates essential information about social need and relative social standing that is critical for the creation of shared meaning during interaction, as shown through the convergence of vocal spectra in the paraverbal range during “normal” interaction. Further, filtering out the lower frequency range from individuals’ speech during conversation diminishes the quality of communications and undermines the creation of shared meaning, a fact that is readily perceived by others who observe the interaction.

3) Recent sociological research has isolated the processing of paralanguage in the right cerebral hemisphere.

4) Neurological research on autism suggests that overstimulation of the right hemisphere is important for understanding the symptomatology of these disorders.

5) Sociological research sheds further light on the preceding point with the implication that overstimulation of the right hemisphere in individuals with autism may hamper interaction by disabling an individual’s ability to process the paraverbal signal in a manner that would allow her or him to achieve interactional synchrony with others.

6) Technological advancements developed out of a line sociological research spanning almost three decades suggest that overstimulation may be reduced by a dichotic filtration method that separates the verbal and paraverbal signals of speech communications and sends only the latter to the right cerebral hemisphere.
